Ceramic versus Titanium Implants?

Traditionally, dental implants are made of titanium metal. Usually, the titanium is combined with other metals to create a stronger alloy. Over the past 40 years, the shape and surface features of implants have evolved, but the titanium material has been a constant. Although overall the success with titanium implants is good, some patients are concerned about the presence of metal in their mouths. Studies have demonstrated that titanium implants often contain trace amounts of nickel, which about 5-10% of the population is allergic to. Additionally, some studies indicate that some people may be sensitive to the titanium itself!
Ceramic implants are made of zirconia. They are 100% metal-free. They are completely bioinert meaning they do not interact or produce an immune response when introduced to biologic tissue. This means that you are receiving the most natural tooth replacement possible! Ceramic implants received FDA clearance for use in 2007 and over 25,000 implants have been placed with success rates approaching 99%. Ceramic implants have success rates similar to titanium implants, and with so many benefits over metal, ceramic implants are a great choice!

What is Zirconia/Ceramic?

Zirconia is a non-metallic, white crystalline oxide of zirconium. It is a ceramic. Ceramics are known to be very strong and durable. Zirconia is actually stronger than titanium!  Ceramics are substituting for metals in many areas of our lives. Ceramic knives stay sharp longer than their metal counterparts. Ceramics are also used for ball bearings, in the space shuttle, and in automobiles.
In dentistry, ceramics are slowly replacing metal in every area.. There are ceramic crowns, ceramic fillings, and even ceramic braces! Many of our patients want to replace their “silver” metal fillings with natural, white ceramic fillings. And now, ceramic dental implants are a great alternative to  metal implants.

How are ceramic implants placed?

You will be surprised at how easy it is to get ceramic implants. The procedure takes around 30 minutes during which you will be completely numb and comfortable. Sedation is available to help you relax and to make the procedure EVEN more comfortable. After the implants are placed, we will provide you with detailed home care instructions to make sure you heal quickly with no complications. After a healing period of 3-6 months, the teeth (crowns) are made and attached to the implants.

It seems that metal dental implants are more popular than ceramic? Why is that?

For starters, metal implants have been around for longer. The first titanium dental implant was placed in 1965. Most implant training residencies today, teach using metal implants. In the past, ceramic implants were not strong enough and could fracture. However, ceramic technology has advanced so far that today’s ceramic implants are stronger than titanium! They have been used extensively in Europe for many years, and received FDA clearance for use in the United States in 2007. Placing ceramic implants require additional training and certification. We are proud to be one of the first periodontal offices in the country to offer this amazing metal-free breakthrough.

How do I care for my ceramic dental implants?

Just like your natural teeth- brush, floss, and see your dentist regularly for cleanings. We may also recommend a bite guard to make sure there is not too much pressure placed on the implant.
